    FenCon and Vadercast
Vadercast has posted their latest podcast called The DO's of Convention Organizing

FenCon V's Conchair, Russ Miller, participated in the podcast.

    http://www.vadercast.com/

"Our first live show on Talkhoe! With things settling down around Fedcon USA, it was important to us here at Vadercast to do a show about how a convention should be run. We have had the best example of how NOT to run a convention come through DFW, now its time to let the pros speak out. We have Mark Walters from Sci-Fi Expo and Dallas ComiCon, Todd Carlton from All-Con, Russ Miller from Fencon, and our own Cole Houston who, along with Catherine, organizes the APOTAC’s Comic Toy and Collectable Swap Meets. All are local to the DFW area and have multiple successful conventions under their belt. For any and all who are looking into or just want to know some of the behind the scenes info about convention organizing, most definitely check out this episode."

Announcing Catherine Asaro as GOH for Trinoc-coN 9, 7/25, Durham NC
    (crossposted)

Mark your calendars and get ready to kick back and relax at Trinoc-coN 9, July 25-27, 2008, at the Crestwood Suites in Durham, NC (near Research Triangle Park):

    http://www.trinoc-con.org/

Announcing Guest of Honor Catherine Asaro, award-winning author of the Skolian Saga, "The Veiled Web," "Sunrise Alley," "Alpha," etc. Other guests include Baen Books' Senior Editor Hank Davis, [info]bud_webster, [info]starheel42, Allen Wold, and more. A full guest list is available at: http://www.trinoc-con.org/guests.htm .

The Crestwood is an all-suites property near the corner of the intersection of Highways 54 and 55, just off I-40 at exit 278. It's very suited for the more laid-back programming at this year's con, and the rates are *extremely* reasonable: $45/night for a one-bedroom suite, $65/night for a two-bedroom suite. There's even a swimming pool. :)

Call them at 919-361-1234, and mention "Trinoc-coN" to get the discount. You can see the layouts of the one- and two-bedroom suites here: http://www.crestwoodsuites.com/roomtypes.php?p=durham

Register for the con here: http://www.trinoc-con.org/registration.htm - note children under 6 years old get in free.

Unlike past years, I'm not on con staff this year, so con questions can go to to these folks: [info]laminahospes, [info]loke_dogg, and [info]pope_j_rod.

I know it's late notice, but it's a relaxacon this year, and I hope some of you will be able to attend.

If you've not read any Catherine Asaro before, you can read and download the first novel in the Skolian saga, Primary Inversion, from the Baen Free Library, here:

    Orbital pictures
I didn't take as many pictures at Orbital as I usually do at conventions, and it has taken me ages to get round to putting them on my web page, but I've done so now and they are here:

    PSA: Teeshirt printers
    http://www.mountainsidedesigns.com/

I'm having the BEST teeshirt printing experience of my adult life currently.

Assuming they show up on time, don't all stick together and look as good as the sample, I would wholeheartedly recommend Dorie and her crew to anybody looking for tees.

    Global warming
If the globe is warming, it sure as hell isn't making itself evident over here. It's frickin' July and it's frickin' cold, around 15C (55-60F). This sucks because you can't even sleep with the balcony door open which I usually like doing in the summer, because you get chilly and cold and it sucks and it sucks and I want it to stop and it should be warmer. There should be more global warming dammit.

    Working at a hotel
I would just like to say that, while there are a lot of negative aspects too, some days I'm just very glad I work at a hotel because of the glimpses into the private lives of celebrities. Like just now, getting to be alone in a room with a fairly famous young blonde, talking casually with her. Man, I'd love to get into the specifics but since we have very strict privacy rules I can't say any more than that. I gotta admit, things like this put a smile on my face. I guess I'm easy to please. :)

    Another loss to First Fandom
For those who may have ever been to Bubonicon in Albuquerque, or other western cons over the years...Jack Speer passed on last night.
    Excerpt from email I got...
    ----
...We just received news from Ruth that Jack died last night/this morning.
Ruth says she found him on the floor ~3 AM.
No details yet.  Jack will be cremated, and services will be at the French mortuary on University Blvd. NE.
Watch the paper for announcements, and we'll forward any info we receive here.

    Up the FF Dinosaurs...
    ----
We were planning to have a Q&A session w/Jack as part of the programming for Bubonicon this year.  There's been an ongoing project to try and get some of his memories of early fandom down on paper or tape, I don't know the status of that, but I hope we got some of it done.
Jack was 89, if I remember right, and had been a SF fan from back in the day.  A few months ago, for example, at our ASFS meeting, we all brought books or memories of the books that got us interested in the genre.  Jack showed up with a genuine 1913 edition of Tom Swift.  FTW.
So long, Jack, see you in the stars!

    Ganked from editgirl ...
    The Challenge:
    - Post 3 things you've done in your lifetime that you don't think anybody else on your friends list has done.
    - See if anybody else responds with "I've done that." If they have, you need to add another! (2.b., 2.c., etc...)
    - Have your friends cut & paste this into their journal to see what unique things they've done in their life.

So here's the things I've done:

    1. Toured parts of (now defunct) East Germany from the back of a motorcycle the summer the Berlin Wall came down.
    2. Got a couple of Oracle/Nightwing short stories published in an online fanzine.
    3. Sang in an a capella chorus in college.
3.b. Worked as a children's camp counselor in England for one summer.

I currently co-own a freeware game development company named Fifth Generation Gaming. We are currently expanding into different markets with great success and now want to carry on expanding by increasing the number of games we release. We are looking for all types of games, so if you are a developer or know a developer who wants to expose their game and keep improving it then get in touch with us from the link below.

All games are released for free, we have no intention of becoming commercial at the moment but in the future if it is a step we think we are willing to take, and the games are up to scratch, we will take this option. So if you are looking to create a game or you need someone to elevate your free game to the next level then contact me at jasonridpath@5thgenerationgaming.com or check out the forums at: http://www.forum.5thgenerationgaming.com
